Grand Ages: Rome, Mostly a grand bore

The amount of Roman city building games has increased exponentially over the past few years and Grand Ages: Rome brings nothing new to the table. The game is quite similar to all the other building games released before and has nothing substantially new to offer.

Grand Ages: Rome comes after two very similar games and boasts of nothing different other than improved graphics and options for the building exteriors. The main mode of play is single player campaign with little scope for much else. Missions involving trade-offs and military expertise don’t make an impact because of their poor development. There is a new interactive interface that makes the process of construction smoother and somewhat creative but in the end, everything follows the same route and shows no scope for a challenge. Even with the online multiplayer mode, excitement ebbs at an all time low. To build a successful city, you must first cater to the plebeians and then move higher in the ranks and create dream houses for the patricians. Every stratum has a different need but since resources are easily available, the game starts to bore. The only excitement comes from fire fighting when something catches fire.

The game is linear with no story twists. At best, you can role play as a small roman family or choose campaigns under varied dynasties. The historical themes add little to the appeal and unless you wish to buff up your architectural skills or haven’t played the genre before, it’s not worth the full retail price tag.
